Okay we’re back, and this time with Nate Smith who quit his day gig!
Dang, it has been so long since we played our third gig at Club Dada. It almost felt like we were starting over. We’ve had only two rehearsals in between due to burn out from working in our regular bands or due to things like my Corolla singing “la cucaracha ya no quiere caminar”. (I’ve got a new car now and I’ll be happy to tell you where to find a good deal.) A rehearsal was managed due to the courtesy of David Morgan the house engineer at Poor David’s Pub on the afternoon of this show. He let us in early and we were able to run some tunes down. As well as give him a good feel of what we were about.
We greatfully rec eived our 30 or so fans that came down and grooved out. But, not only to LSV but to Ponty Bone and The Squeezetones who played after us at our request. There was no break in the show last night. We invited the Squeezetones to merge in with us as we did this off the wall jam David De La Garza started, I guess called “Who Named You That?” Uh that’s what he was singing anyway. But, the groove was a zydeco/gospel kind of boogie that was perfect for jamming with Ponty and his fellows. The bassist merged in about half way through on that song as well as the drummer. I went to playing tuba. Word in the audience was that the transition was magical. I liked it myself. We also did a second line version of the Mungo Jerry hit “In The Summertime”. That was way cool.
After the LSV set, everyone in the house including myself went out and danced together. It was a blast! I had such a great time.
David Cox, a member of Los Super Vatos familia kept hammering at me to play my song “Dulcecita”. I ragged him and realized quickly that he just needed a little TLC. But seriously, I hope to bring in some tunes from my corner of Brave Combo or even of La Mafia or Los Basics, however, perhaps a little later down the road as we would like to learn new songs and get the feel of what it really is we are to sound like. We are still working on our identity. Even if at times still wondering if this music is something we should just keep in a jam room. Your input and suggestions and enthusiasm are of interest to us being that you are the ying to our yang in our (audience and performers) experience so please drop us a line if you have a suggestion. We may follow it, we may not but … we will read and consider it.
(Fun note: once after a Brave Combo performance at a festival in New England, I was honored to meet John Linnel of They Might Be Giants. He asked “Did you write Dulcecita” and I said “yes”, he said “that’s my favorite song”.)
Hmm, perhaps David Cox is right, we should learn it and put the LSV touch to it soon
