Mi Esquinita

Continental Club Houston, TX

We went on immediately following a regular Beatles cover band called Beetle. They have a very nice following and good thing going on there at the Continental Club in Houston on Thursday nights. So we were fortunate to have some of their audience as we were starting. However, the room gradually morphed into Los Super Vatos core familia, Houston branch.

I was happy to feel less fear and more into jamming. I didn’t even drink. Well, I sort of nursed a beer. But, I was high on music. We are little by little starting to get bold with stretching the songs out and messing with the forms a little. As we get more comfortable, we’ll be able to start doing more off the cuff - off the wall improvisation. I love this kind of stuff, and looking forward to more of it.

We have only played 5 gigs to this point but wonder, could we, are we, possibly, a ladies’ band??? I’m mean come on. Why do guys, especially, join a band? Although the turn out has been small to this point, the females to men ratio in the room have easily been 2 to 1 against guys. Perhaps, even 3 to 1. Now, I really do play music because I have to. It’s a biological function for me and I’m sure the rest of Los Super Vatos are the same. No one wants to have a regular day job. We want to play music for a living for sure. And we love where “the now” of playing music takes us. And how it makes us feel especially when the audience is digging it. But, if we can get paid to do this and watch groovy people dance to us then it is totally consuming and gratifying.  Thank you very much.

However we did run into a little bit of a challenge. One obnoxious and irritating young lady really wanted to hear “Brick House”. Now, nothing against The Commodores at all, when that song first came out, it was a brick house. But, man, come on! I did offer her cover charge back so she could go to another club where the band or deejay could play it for her. However, I mentioned to the audience that we were about to do a song that had some of the same notes. It was “Belly Dancer” from my hopefully upcoming album Love and Drama. I challenged the ladies in the house to dance to it. And Los Super Vatos were very happy they accepted the challenge. They knocked us out. About ten to fifteen ladies got out and did their interpretations. We were Los Super Happy Vatos for sure.

We were delighted to see Sara Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald’s there in Houston and her booking manager Michelle in the house. They were present to ask us to play for their anniversary party with Del Castillo on Saturday July 23rd. We gratefully accept the invitation. See ya there.
