Mi Esquinita

Dan’s Silverleaf Denton, TX

Man…..oh man……we are in after glow here at the LSV estate north. The guys are so content and it’s like holiday camp here. The Denton crowd that gathered for our show last night (50), were on fire by the time we were done. We couldn’t believe it. Our previous shows were good and not a bad start. But, last night was a totally different event.

We started about 10:00pm and played till close to 1:00am! And the crowd still wanted more. Screaming! We were Los Beat les as my cousins from Mexico would pronounce.

The folks at the beginning were attentive as usual but, I did notice a comfort on the stage that was unprecedented. The thing was that little by little people were starting to walk in as the night progressed and LSV was finding a good combination of original music and some old school R&B and old Chicano rock covers. The covers weren’t a sell out thing but, just a little bit of sugar to keep the interest on the originals that core fans are beginning to already recognize. Also these covers were done on the fly. So….they were/are fresh and slightly discombobulated in a style all our own.

On stage we were joined by Mike Medina an old colleague of mine from my North Texas daze ahem days. Mike used to play drums with me and Thad Bonduris (guitarist) in a 50s -60s/variety band called the Echoes. This gig was our job that got us through college. After not seeing Mike for quite a while I noticed that not only had he become quite the bass player but congero/percussionist and vocalist as well. He is also a recording engineer and producer for jingles and small projects. The congas added a lot to our style and are important in what we do. So, hopefully as budget will allow, we’ll have a congero on board for our performances. Heck, just a budget for us would be great for a start.

Two of the Brave Combo horns Jeffrey Barnes and Tim Walsh graced the stage with Nathan. Jeffrey and Nathan had a great cat fight on “So Rich”. Tim got up for our rousing rendition of “In The Summertime”,

Los Super Vatos loved playing in Denton and will come back to play at Rubber Gloves on Thursday July 7, 2005.
