Mi Esquinita

VZD’s  Oklahoma City, OK

Oh the humbling……LSV was on a high and excited heading out of Denton and wondering what would await us in OKC. We arrived around 8:00pm and were greeted by the friendly staff who took our order for dinner and we ate well.

The sound person however seemed to take forever getting us up and but nonetheless we felt ready for the challenge. We had an audience of about 40: Some dear old friends including Lana, Tom and Lee from my Brave Combo days were present.

Although the audience was unfamiliar with our material, they listened and even began to dance rather early. It did feel a bit like we were starting all over again but the audience was willing to be involved. But, then, a minor disaster: an old friend thought he would try to help with the ambience and started fiddling with the lighting. The yellow and blue floods that were on us already were just fine for what we were doing however as our buddy decided he was going to try to put on some disco lights, he hit a overwhelmingly powerful white spot on all of us that was like the day of reckoning. Okay maybe that’s a little exaggerated. It was more like when you’re parked at night in a beautiful spot with your very brand new sweetie and in that delicate place between discomfort and comfort where the manner of play is getting figured out and perhaps comfort as well as a basis for familiarity is being established and is being formed and you both are starting to find the groove zone and all of a sudden SLAM! COLD! SLAM! The lights of a patrol car put instant Texas day light right square in your eyes, SQUARE IN YOUR EYES The rest of the number which was the Love Chant, the song that is supposed to tie it all together and make us all feel comfortable had been foiled. We tried to shield ourselves from the light and continue playing but were pretty thrown off. I beseeched our friend to shut that big white spot light. But, he kept dickering around with the other disco light and not getting to the source of our situation: that big white intimidating spot light! Well, to now avail, we went on to the next song but felt our mojo leaking. It was like we were standing there naked in a cold shower of white light. Ah, a cold shower…the great equalizer no matter how big a vato you are. Well being that it was our 7th gig, our mojo recovery chops are a little lacking. Little by little, the insecurity started to run rampant on the stage chasing us down the hole. I’m not sure how apparent this was but, all of a sudden that feeling of whose coming in or going out the front door, started to affect us. Although the light was finally shut, we started to loose our newly found love or perhaps we thought in our own heads. We were greeted at the end by those who were departing and still “got it”. I would have announced that we were coming back on Friday July 8th but felt hesitant thinking perhaps brother Chad Bleakly was gonna let us loose off that date. Well he didn’t. And assured us of hanging in there for the long haul soooo…..we’re gonna be back at VZD’s for Friday July 8th.

Everybody head out and help us find our heart in OKC.
