I didn’t know man, that tonight or today era el birthday del Artie Villasenor. Pues que chingaos Artie? I don’t even know how old you are bro. But, I know that all those years of experencia are the reason that you are not only the eldest Vato but the most venerable and stately. El Artie Villasenor is like well….he should be one of the heads at the top of Mt. Rushmore. Artie doesn’t have to jump around like all the young chavalon rockeros of nowadays. He just steps up and let’s you know exactly where it is with less than a hand full of notes to a phrase and just the right bends and just a touch of feed back, not too much like the other Chicano guitarist of note (I know, blasphemy.) And like EF Hutton, when his guitar speaks, people listen. But not any winning investor en el pinche EF Hutton is as rich as those who get to hear those rico Artie Villasenor riffs up close. Happio Verde to Artie. And if we were at a party with my dad, Don Cenobio Castillo Hernandez II, he would lift a shot glass and say to you: “Salud, dinero y amor..y tiempo para gastar”.

Cosmos may not be the typical place you’d hear Los Super Vatos but it may be the most intimate. There’s minimal production i.e., lighting and sound. The stage is low and the dancers are close to the band but not enough to fall over band gear. We worked an entire 2-90 minute set show! I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t know we had that many songs. In between the prepared material we had a lot of improvised musical craziness at the end. We managed to pick up a few Cosmos friends as our regular Vatonianos had upside down cake, balloons and blown out birthday candles. Feliz Cumpleanos to Lucy and Rene, who were celebrating their birthdays that night tambien.
