It was kind of funny to see our name in the obviously placed marquee on the corner of Mechanic St. at Greek Brothers Oyster Bar and Restaurant in the heart of downtown El Campo across from the Post Office. Well, funny cause coming upon it off guard is still novel. Greek Bros. not only has a very kind and helpful production staff, wait staff, and management but a nice room, sound and lights. They have great chow and a prolific roster of performers who have worked there over the years. Although, they have a healthy roster of country acts, they are expanding into other genres hence, our performance there. George Charklis, the owner, wasn’t sure how things would turn out on a Fourth of July weekend but he was willing to stick his budget out and try a certain Chicano rock band anyway. So, two abnormal situations led to a slow night. But, the house seemed impressed with Los Super Vatos with words of “you guys are great…different … ya’ll are really good”. These are exactly the words we want to hear, even more than the change in our pockets. It’s a sign that we’re doing the right thing. Great and different are good with us. If we play honestly, the rest will follow.
We know we’re a chick band but this night was ridiculous especially with the turn out being minimal and all but aside from a couple of our regular honeys, Josie, Heather, Virginia, and well a couple of guys with them we had an entire large table of hot young ladies having a bachelorette party. At first I thought, oh no, we’re hosed. They’re gonna want “Brickhouse” all night long and not shut up about it. Wrong! Fortunately David De La Garza prepared a CD of Vatoish kind of music. They got up with those jams as we immediately blended into our set. Of course, Josie and Heather were the first ones out and our bachelorettes followed suit at first trying to emulate the sistas’ hips and then just doing there own naughty little groove thing. Some dudes need to start coming to these gigs! But, if you don’t LSV will just have to handle it alone. (sigh)
Later on in the night I asked Cassie, our bride to be, to call her dude at his bachelor party. He sounded like he was really wasted, more like groaning. Perhaps it was only the beginning of moaning for what will become the full blown day of reckoning for his atomically thundering blasted head and seasick stomach for the next day. A crudo that he’ll never forget. One that not even the best bowl of menudo may be able to cure. When he awakens he’ll have thought Cassie had the devil’s voice when she called him the night before and busted him with Bambi. We got the whole club to say hello to him as we thanked him for lending us the girls for the evening. David also told him to say hello to “Bambi” for us all. Ha, it might have well been a bachelor party for one of Los Super Vatos, as the girls got up on stage demonstrating their thong undies at their interpretation of “Belly Dancer”. Well, hell, for that matter every LSV gig is our bachelor party…..oh…ahem...except for Steve-o Salazar, but we know he’s not complaining.
On Saturday August 20, 2005, Los Super Vatos will reappear at Greek Brother’s Oyster Bar and Restaurant in El Campo with Del Castillo, a rising Flamenco rock style band.
